Tropical and coastal regions encompass a substantial proportion of the global population and are characterized by complex interactions between environmental, social, economic, and health determinants. These regions serve as critical hubs for biodiversity, fisheries, maritime activities, trade, and tourism, while simultaneously supporting the livelihoods and well-being of millions of people. However, the sustainability of public health in tropical and coastal settings is increasingly challenged by climate change, environmental degradation, ecosystem disruption, rapid urbanization, population mobility, disaster risks, and the persistent burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, water and vector-borne diseases, food insecurity, and inequitable access to essential health services disproportionately affect populations residing in these areas. Health systems in tropical and coastal regions often face structural constraints, including limited resources, workforce shortages, infrastructure vulnerability, and governance challenges. These conditions underscore the urgent need for resilient, adaptive, and sustainable public health strategies that integrate environmental health, climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, and health equity.
Strengthening public health sustainability in tropical and coastal areas requires interdisciplinary collaboration, strong policy frameworks, scientific innovation, and community-centered approaches. Aligning national and regional health strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate commitments, and global health security frameworks is essential to ensure long-term population well-being and environmental stability.
Diponegoro University (UNDIP), a higher education institution in Indonesia, is committed to implementing various SDG programs, specifically in health and poverty. This is to support the Indonesian Government’s commitment to achieving the national SDGs. UNDIP also strengthens international collaboration to be a part of World Class University (WCU) with its tagline “ Undip Bermartabat dan Bermanfaat” (Undip Dignified and Useful).
The Faculty of Public Health is one of the faculty at Diponegoro University that wants to contribute to the knowledge of public health resilience especially in tropical and coastal areas. Through interdisciplinary research and collaboration with local communities and stakeholders, we aim to develop a holistic approach through the International Conference of Public Health-Tropical and Coastal Development (ICOPH-TCD) 2025. ICOPH-TCD is an international conference routinely organized by the Faculty of Public Health at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) since 2016. It involves collaboration among various speakers from different countries, as well as presenters who deliver papers on public health-related topics in the fields of Biostatistics and Demography, Health Promotion, Occupational Health and Safety, Reproductive Health, Epidemiology and Tropical Diseases, Entomology, Community Nutrition, Environmental Health, as well as Health Administration and Policy.
In this year, the Faculty of Public Health at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) will hold the ICOPH-TCD with the topic “Strengthening Public Health Sustainability in Tropical and Coastal Areas”. This international seminar aims to bring together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss innovative approaches to enhancing public health resilience in tropical and coastal areas. By sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices, we seek to foster collaborative solutions that address the unique challenges faced by these communities. This event will serve as a platform to explore integrated, sustainable, and culturally sensitive health interventions, ultimately contributing to more resilient and equitable health systems globally.
Furthermore, this international conference is also expected to create opportunities for collaboration between the Faculty of Public Health, Diponegoro University with various healthcare and educational institutions around the world on health research, visiting lectures, and student exchanges. As part of its implementation, a call for papers is also held, serving as a platform for disseminating research findings on public health and increasing the number of high-quality publications published in reputable journals and proceedings.
